From The Alden Network Podcasts – Respite Care

Caregivers are selfless people, putting the needs of others above their own. But what happens when they need a vacation or want to take some time off?

Respite care may be the solution. It is the ideal way to give the caregiver a break while ensuring appropriate care for a loved one. It’s best if respite care is utilized before the caregiver becomes exhausted or starts feeling overwhelmed. Regularly scheduled respite stays can help reduce burnout and stress.

Types of respite care
There are several types of respite care.

In-home care includes assistance with basic daily tasks, such as dressing, bathing, grooming, cooking and light housekeeping and is performed in the client’s home.

Adult daycare involves a social setting in a center among other adults, with planned daily activities. This is a great way to ensure your loved one stays socially engaged and active during the day.

The respite care that Alden provides takes place in a rehabilitation/skilled nursing facility or memory care community. This involves meeting more advanced or complex medical needs, while still providing daily activities, nutritious meals and compassionate care.

Self-care is vital
Self-care is one of the many overlooked areas of senior care. Caregivers need time to offload, destress, and have some time to relax and regroup. Stress reduction, renewed energy, mood improvement and time for socialization all ease the caregiver’s mind, body and spirit.

Caregiving is a never-ending job, but it doesn’t have to be a round-the-clock, all-year-long responsibility. Respite care offers that break, which could be key to both your happiness and efficiency as a caregiver, as well as providing a welcome change of scenery for your loved one.

Care facility amenities
Respite care communities are designed for comfort and socialization. The Alden Network’s senior living communities have Wi-Fi, and iPads and laptops are available for use. Books and games are also on hand to make the stay more enjoyable.

Nursing staff consider any type of care the patient may need during a stay. They assess daily living habits, medications, and other medical care needs so they know they can provide the necessary care to help ensure a healthful and comfortable stay.

Memory care communities have specialized programming to reduce any confusion for patients facing cognitive issues. They are located in secure neighborhoods so patients can still be mobile.

Alden has activities built around the early, mid- and end stage of memory decline. Music, art, aroma and pet therapy are available for memory-challenged patients.

How to get started
The first step is to tour the community, so you can meet the staff and check out the schedule. It’s the perfect chance to ask questions and alleviate any concerns you have about placing your loved one in respite care.

Pack for your loved one to have a cozy time while away. Comfortable clothes and shoes are key to enjoying activities and getting around. Toiletries are provided, but you can also bring any preferred items. Books and hobbies help pass the time. Personal items like pictures, quilts, or decor are encouraged to make the space more “homey” during the stay.
